Web Development

If your business plan is to expand out to international markets, you may have considered having an international website to have a more global business presence and target specific markets. Yet it can be a minefield to know where to begin and how to attract overseas interest online.

From studies by Cisco Systems we know that 56% of the internet’s content is in English, but only 27% of its users come from English-speaking countries. Accessing the non-English speaking market allows you to potentially more than double audience and growth.

Yet where do you begin? Do you create multiple sites for each country you’re trying to target? Do you have just one .com site with multiple menus for different countries? Do you get someone to translate the content specifically for each country, or do you cross your fingers and hope Google translates it right?

Translation

The first place to start is to work our which markets you’re looking to target and who.  If you’re working on a B2B level, then it may be best to leave your site in English. With English being the global language, many businesses will converse and do business in English. Yet when it comes to the content on your site, keep it in plain English so that it is easy to understand and free from too many colloquialisms and idiomatic expressions.

Google Analytics

If you want to work out which markets to tailor your content for, check out your Google analytics to find out where the visitors are coming from and the amount of traffic from these countries.

One Site V’s Many Sites

Perhaps just have one .com site for your global presence and then in the menu have a drop down for each country, particularly if your visitors are from a range of different countries.  The Booking.com website does this really well. - http://www.booking.com

Optimise for Mobile

Ensure your site is optimised for mobile users, particularly if your ideal target market is in Africa or South Korea where there is a strong smartphone infrastructure. Some countries have bypassed landlines and predominantly use mobile devices for search.

Contact Details

You need to account for time differences if your business is based in the UK and your customers are overseas. Ensure your contact details page includes an international number with the full dial code so your customers can get through with no problem.

Provide an email address, along with social media information so your customer can contact you out of your office hours.  However, It’s all well and good having social media buttons on your site but it’s a good idea to research which social media platforms are relevant to your target market. For instance, in China you can’t access Facebook but Baidu is their social media platform.

Content Marketing

Content Marketing otherwise known as non-interruption marketing is essentially creating valuable, relevant and consistent content for your consumers that will engage and create awareness about your brand.

Content marketing is really like a first date. If all you do is talk about yourself, there won’t be a second date.
