Future Workplaces

Future Workplaces

The modern workplace is almost unrecognisable from what it was 10 years ago. Gone are the days of sitting at your desk from 9am-5pm with the same people, space at a premium and being lucky enough to have a window seat! Todays workplaces are centered on creating positive workplace experiences for employees and their clients, injecting inspirational design into the workplace, boosting creativity and introducing collaborative workspaces with chill out zones to attract and retain talent. Employers are increasingly recognising that our workplace has a major factor on our well-being and are creating desirable spaces where people want to work, achieve and feel valued.

LIGHT

Natural lighting is a key component in the modern workplace and one of the most requested elements from employees. Not only is it a benefit to the employer by saving on lighting and electricity costs but a report by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory showed that it reduces the effects of Seasonal Affective Disorder, increases visual clarity and colour perception and stimulates the pineal gland which helps to regulate sleep patterns, increases mental alertness and increases productivity! A sure bonus for the workplace! In addition it doesn’t necessarily have to be that costly, brings the outdoors in and creates an environment where people want to work.

GO GREEN

Whilst we’re on the subject of bringing the outdoors in, this trend is set to increase with many businesses adding natural plants and greenery, exotic water features and incorporating “living walls” into their workplace.

OLD MEETS NEW

Older buildings with history and heritage are being opened up and given a new lease of life with contemporary and simplistic interiors, big on space and grand on features, organisations are looking at stunning architecture to set them apart from their competitors and encourage future talent.

QUIET SPACES

With the rise in open plan workplaces, there is a surge in demand for quiet places where employees can concentrate on their tasks without distractions. Mini library style spaces or quiet pods are being implemented within the open plan environments to cater for employees who need to concentrate on the task in hand, take video conference calls or phone calls.

VIBRANT COLOUR

2019 has seen a huge trend towards using bold colour on office walls and spaces to add vibrancy, lift the area and make it stand out. In addition, it offers a fantastic opportunity for businesses to highlight their company vision and goals with logos and key messaging, making a real impact in statement colours. “Adding a splash of colour to your life” has never seemed more prevalent.

WELL-BEING

Creating an environment where we can “work, rest and play” is increasingly on the rise. We all know that sitting at your desk for long periods of time staring at a computer screen can harm your posture, eyes and overall well-being. Therefore, work spaces are increasingly adopting sit/stand desks, work out areas and chill out zones ensuring that their employee’s health is well balanced and in essence increasing their productivity.

To conclude the modern workplace will evolve dramatically over the next decade to attract and retain the next generation of talent and those employers who refuse to embrace it may just end up regretting it!
